Whose Counsel Are You Following?

One of my deepest concerns about Christians, particularly those I pastor, is where do they get their counsel.  Who do they go to for advice?  Do they get their counsel from godly men and women or do they get it elsewhere.  The very first verse in the book of Psalms has a word for us.  The verse reads Psalm 1:1 (NKJV), “Blessed is the man who walks not in the counsel of the ungodly….”  There are a lot of Christians who walk in the counsel of the ungodly.

What constitutes an ungodly person?  Could this person be an atheist?  Maybe, but not necessarily!  Could this person be an immoral person?  Maybe, but not necessarily!  Could this person be a devious person?  Maybe, but not necessarily!  This person could well be a good moral individual.  This could be a hard working man, committed to providing for his family.  This person could be a man who loves his wife and his children and would gladly give his life for them.  So what constitutes an ungodly person?  An ungodly person is a person who has no thought of God or God’s will in their life or the decisions they make.  An ungodly person is a person who has no time for God in their life.  An ungodly person has no room for Christ or His church in the life they live and the things they do.  In short, God is not on their list of priorities.

When someone who belongs to God gets involved with the ungodly in anything they are unequally yoked.  Paul said in 2 Cor. 6:14 (NKJV), “Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers.  For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness?  And what communion has light with darkness?”  The counsel of the ungodly will lead you away from God’s people and ultimately away from God.  It does not necessarily have to be “bad” things they lead you into.  They just lead you to the place where there is no room left in your life for God.

When you come to the place where there is no room for God in your life you are on a downhill spiral and you will not finish well.  Whose counsel are you following?
